Southampton, in numbers.

An independent, standalone guide to the city’s official evidence.

What this site does

Southampton Counts brings published figures together in the visual style of Pompey Counts. Its own pages, data files and logo are separate from UK Stat-pack’s live and development sites.

The six pillars are editorial navigation themes. Official statistics, council-reported figures and historical bid outcomes carry their own source and date.

How figures are checked

  1. Find the original official release for Southampton and check the geography.
  2. Read the period, unit, denominator and any revisions or provisional status.
  3. Save the source evidence and a checksum; record the exact published value and its display rounding.
  4. Generate every repeated figure from that same evidence register and check the built pages against it.

ONS and Nomis provide population, labour-market and housing data. NHSBSA supplies NHS dentistry. The Southampton Data Observatory and Safe City Partnership supply local DfE, Defra, ONS, Home Office and police.uk evidence. Sources and caveats appear beside each figure.

Some council pages restrict automated retrieval. Where necessary, the register identifies an indexed official webpage as the checked source. We do not present an old councillor list as current.

Geography matters

City, ward, hospital catchment, England and Great Britain are labelled separately. Citywide figures are never presented as ward estimates.

Periods differ

Sources publish at different times. A figure checked today may describe an earlier year. The date beside the number tells you which.

Limits matter

Survey estimates have uncertainty. Recorded crime is not all crime. NHS patients seen is not a measure of appointment availability.

Privacy and accessibility

Search runs in your browser. Postcode lookup sends the entered postcode to postcodes.io; Southampton Counts does not save it. The site has no advertising or analytics scripts. Fonts are requested from Google Fonts. Hosting providers may keep normal technical access logs.

Charts include labels, keyboard-accessible details and data tables. The ward list is an alternative to using the map. Navigation and source links work without JavaScript; search and postcode lookup require it.
